Dog Got Sprayed By A Skunk?

Updated: May 29, 2022

It's that time of year again here in the North East. Skunks are starting to get a little more active and if your dog gets a bit too close to one they may end up with a face full of gag-inducing stink.

As any dog owner knows, this is a very smelly predicament.

Thankfully, there is a simple solution:

Hydrogen peroxide, Dawn dish soap, and water.

Just mix up a batch of this cleaning solution and shampoo your dog as usual. The hydrogen peroxide will help to break down the skunk's oils, and the Dawn will cut through the grime.

Within minutes, your pup will be smelling sweet and clean again. This way of getting rid of that smell is better than the old tomato juice method.

1. Keep your dog outside

You really don't want that smell carried all over your house so it would be best to keep them outside while you or someone else gets the ingredients ready.

2. Gather your supplies

  • 1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide

  • 1/4 cup of baking soda

  • 1 tbsp of Dawn dishwashing liquid

Mix these together well.

Caution: Do not make this ahead of time or store any for later as it might explode if kept in a bottle.

3. Massage into your dog's fur (Do Not Get In Dogs Eyes)

Using rubber gloves rub the mixture into your dog's fur. Only leave it on for about 3 minutes then thoroughly rinse with copious amounts of water.

4. Shampoo time.

Using a dog shampoo (not human shampoo). give your dog a bath as you would normally do. Towel dry your pup then place them in a warm place to allow them to fully dry without getting cold.

After everything is done if you happen to notice you got some of that skunk smell on your clothes you can simply wash them in the laundry with detergent and a 1/4 cup of baking soda.

You can buy some over-the-counter products to have on hand just in case.

I recommend Natures Miracle.
